PRESIDENT BUHARI APPOINTS AN IGBO AS CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF
President Muhammadu Buhari while accepting the immediate resignation of the Service Chiefs, and their retirement from service, on Tuesday 26 January, announced their immediate replacement with Major-General Leo Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General I. Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao, Chief of Air Staff.
The disengaged service chiefs are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
President Buhari thanks the outgoing Service Chiefs for their “overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country,” and wish them well in their future endeavours.
The President congratulates the new Service Chiefs, and urges them to be loyal and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities.
There have been calls by many Nigerians to President Buhari to sack the service chiefs, whose retirement from service were long over due, because of the worsening security situation in the country.
The President was also chastised for his lobe sided appointments, for not balancing his appointments inline with the geopolitical composition of the country.
So, with this sudden announcement, it appeared Mr President wants to take his critics by surprise.Of particular interest among the new service chiefs is that of the Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General Leo Irabor, a Deltan from Agbor in Ika South LGA, whom the President may as well referred to as an Igbo.
Recall that President Buhari, had referred the duo of Godwin Emefiele and Ibe Kachiku, both who hailed from same district with Irabor, as Igbos when he was facing farce criticism for alleged marginalisation of the Igbo’s in his appointments during his first tenure.
By heeling to the voice of the people on these two burning issues, it appeared Mr president is signaling that he is poised to finishing strong.
