HOW THE PROPOSED STARS UNIVERSITY, IDUMUJE UGBOKO, WILL IMPACT SPORTS IN NIGERIA.
By Frank Iroroh
In the past decades since independence, Nigeria Sports has been run in mundane fashion, but the present minister of youth and sports, Hon Sunday Dare appears to be an innovative sports minister who truly understand that sports is a big business globally and seems poised to change the narrative to conform with the international norms.
In his speech at the Inter Ministerial Technical Session on Sports Industry Development oorganised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in collaboration with the Nigeria Economic Summit Group.
The minister assured that sports will be turned into a big business in Nigeria as against the current status where it is regarded as a welfare service by governments in Nigeria. (Punch 22, 2019).
The minister in the speech promised to roll out policy that will create employment and generate revenue through sports in Nigeria, in collaboration with private investors in the sports sector.
As good and great as the policy might look like, a major obstacle may impedes the implementation.
Nigeria is in shortage of professionals in different department of sports to drive the policy home.
Presently Sports in Nigeria is run by quacks, at most Physical Education teachers and mostly graduate of National Institute for Sports (NIS), which of course has limited courses offered at diploma level.
For the minister’s lofty dreams for Sports to come true, professionals are needed to man the sector.
This is where Hon Prince Ned Nwoko’s vision to establish the sports university to train these essential manpower in the sports industry, has become compelling.
For Nigeria Sports to meet global expectations, the sector requires professional Sports Administrators, Organizers, sociologists, psychologists, physiologists, marketers and sports communicators and coaching technologists amongst others.
These are the courses the proposed Stars University, Idumuje Ugboko, Aniocha North Local Government Area, Delta State, will be offering.
Nigeria Sports will no doubt witness tremendous revolutionary changes by the time the university begins to produce graduates in the aforementioned fields.
This is why all lovers of sports and development oriented minds must continue to lend their support to Hon Prince Ned Nwoko to actualise this great vision for sports in Nigeria.
