ONDO SHINES AT LOVETH HOWELL NATIONAL JUDO CHAMPIONSHIP.
It was a stunning performance by Team Ondo at the just concluded LOVETH HOWELL NATIONAL JUDO OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP, held in Benin City, 13th – 17th December, 2017.
The State won a total of 7 Gold and 5 Silver medals to clinched the first position Trophy and a cash award of Fifty Thousands Naira (N50,000.00).
Lagos State came 2nd with 6Gold, 2Silver and 5Bronze medals, the State went home with the Second position Trophy and a cash prize of Thirty Thousand Naira (N30,000.00), while Rivers State who placed third position with 5Gold, 2Silver and 7 Bronze medals, went home with the third place Trophy and a cash award of Twenty Thousand Naira (N20,000.00).
All the Judokas that participated and won medals in the Championship were presented with medals and certificates of performance by the Nigeria Judo Federation, the organisers of the Competition.
The Championship which was sponsored by Mrs LOVETH HOWELL, an ex Nigeria Judo International, hae close to 34 States and Clubs in attendant.
Some of the States and Clubs that participated in the Championship were,
Ondo, Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Katsina, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Ogun, Yobe, Jigawa, Benue, Kano, Abia, Anambra, Niger, Kogi, Osun and Gombe State.
While some of the Clubs were; Nigerian Army, Nigeria Navy, Energy J C, Eksu, Delsu, ABU, PTN, LOVETH JC, Nigerian Police Force and Oshodi Judo Club.
Speaking to pressmen during the Championship, Mrs Loveth Howell stated that her purposes of sponsoring the Championship was to contribute her quarters towards the growth and development of Judo in the country.
She noted that for the game to grow there must be regular Championships to provide avenue for Judokas to test their skills and techniques and added that her love for the game has motivated her to float the Championship.
The Tournament fixtured 7 weight categories in both the male and female Senior classes, 7 weight categories in both the male and female Junior classes and 6 weight categories in both the male and female Cadet classes, totalling about 40 weight categories in contentions and making it the largest Judo Championship ever staged in Nigeria.
In his messages of appreciations signed on behalf of the President Nigeria Judo Federation, Chief Nsilim, the Secretary General of the Federation Mr Davies O. Congratulated and appreciated Mrs Loveth Howell for her sponsorship of the Championship.
In his words, “we also want to appreciate Mr Jude Atoe, Mr Obi a friend of the Federation, the entire Edo State Judo Association for all your good work, we believe that the next edition is going to be better and we will surely get to the best of Judo in Nigeria.”
The Federation also appreciated the Officiating Officials for the fair and firm decisions taken during the Competition and had special praises for Prof. De-Souza O. A. who was the Championship’s Technical Director for his professionalism.
The State Coaches, States Judo Secretaries, Team Managers of States, Clubs, the Judokas and everyone presents in the Championship were not left out in the appreciation message.
