The Rotary Club Nigeria, Asaba District, over the weekend, joined the league of appraisals of Governor Okowa’s driven Health Care initiatives, when they paid a courtesy visit to the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Health Monitoring, in Asaba.
The team was led by the Asaba District Governor Nominee, Rtn. Andy Uwajeyan, together with the Assistant Governors, Rtn. Edema Ire and Rtn. CA.C Isadebay of Zone 10 & 11 respectively.
The District Governor Nominee, Rtn. Andy Uwajeyan in his opening remarks, commended the Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Health Monitoring, Dr Michael Nwoko, for swinging into action immediately after his appointment. In his words; ” I want to sincerely thank you for your zeal in tandem with the State Governor, towards good health delivery to Deltans, you are a round peg in a round hole when it comes to health care delivery. Since your appointment, you have been up and doing and your visits to various Government Hospitals and Health Centers is not unnoticed,” he said.
Rtn. Andy Uwajeyan however, cited the benefits of eradicating Poliomyelitis which before now was a killer disease in Nigeria but has now reduced drastically in the entire Country. ” As of today, we only have two Countries that have this killer disease ( Polio ), they are, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Nigeria was among the Countries that have this killer disease as at 2016. The World Health Organization announced that if by August 2020, Nigeria maintains the fight against Polio, Nigeria would be certified a Polio Free Country, and the Rotary Club Nigeria, as an organization, is doing everything possible to making sure that Polio is eradicated totally from our Society. We go round in sensitizing the people most especially market places, Schools, Churches, Mosques etc and we also vaccinate Children in the process free of charge.
And as from 31st October to November 22nd, We will be having our free Medical Outreach, where we will be carrying out free test and give out medications on various ailments like, Malaria, HIV etc. We have also picked three People with serious Polio case, which we will sponsor abroad for surgical operation during the period of our medical outreach,” he concluded.
In his response, the SSA to the State Governor on Health Monitoring, Dr Michael Nwoko, thanked the Rotary organization for deeming it fit to visit his office. ” We do recognize your selfless efforts, your time, your resources and as such, Rotary Club Nigeria is a stake holder in the health sector. His Excellency, the Governor of the State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, has achieved so much at the National level with respect to revamping the Health Sector. When he was at the Senate, he sponsored the bill for the National Health Care act and the Basic Healthcare Provision Funding and today, people are reaping the dividend of the foundation that was laid by His Excellency, including the establishment of the State Health Insurance Scheme.
If Polio is eradicated totally from our Society, it will help to score the health indices very high, particularly now that emphasis is being made towards achieving Universal Health Coverage, and you will agree with me that, when it comes to achieving Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria, Delta State is maintaining the lead, with the best health facilities and the necessary parameters towards achieving Universal Health Coverage is being put in place by the State Government.
The whole idea is to guarantee quality, affordable and accessible health care delivery to all while the overall objective is to achieve Universal Health Coverage,” he said.
