Iyase of Idumuje Ugboko to Prince Ned Nwoko…
Ugboko citizens rolled out drums to celebrate the ground breaking ceremony of Africa premier Sports university.
The hilly serene kingdom of Idumuje Ugboko in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, was set agog last week as citizens of the community rolled out drums to celebrate the foundation laying ceremony of the STARS UNIVERSITY, the first of its kind in sub Sahara Africa.
The University, according to the founder, Hon. Prince Ned Nwoko, was established to take care of the Sports sector of the Nigerian economy, which is currently in a critical condition, with no tangible efforts to give it a lifeline.
Sports which contribute close to 30% of Europe’s gross annual income, is one of her major economic engine room in terms of revenue generation and job creation; in manufacturing, advertising, marketing, tourism, entertainment recreation and leisure. This major sector of the world economy has remained comatose in Nigeria.
The outing of a country regarded as the giant of Africa in international Sport meets, has remained abysmal and grossly disappointing to sport loving Nigerians, Africa and the world as a whole.
While addressing guests at the foundation laying ceremony of the university, Hon. Prince Ned Nwoko said, “this university is established to train professional personnel to mann the Sports sector of our economy, to provide conducive environment for our budding athletes to develop their talents and skills to enable them excel in Sports.’ ‘It will also provide them opportunities to acquire necessary education and training in their choice careers to make them functional in the society after their years in Sports performance.” He emphasized.
It must be noted that the need to take proper measures to develop the Sports sector of the Nigerian economy to world standard has been central in the mind of Prince Ned Nwoko for a long time.
As a member of House of Representative, 1999-2003, representating the good people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Prince Ned Nwoko, sponsored a bill for the establishment of a Sports University in Nigeria. The bill has recently been passed by the National Assembly.
Prince Ned Nwoko who never relent in achieving set goals, moved further steps to actualising his lofty dreams for Nigeria, by successfully laying the foundation of the unique University, April 3rd, 2018, at his community, Idumuje Ugboko,
As expected, the citizens of the community were full of joy and praises for the Star Prince of Anioma land, for bringing such landmark development to their community.
In his address at the occasion, the veteran journalist and pioneer editor of the Pointer Newspaper, Asaba and the Iyase of Idumuje Ugboko community (traditional prime minister), Chief Chris Ogwu, expressed joy to witness a dream come true. In his words, “I thank God for this day, I am very happy to be alive to witness this historic event in the life of my community and we will be eternally grateful to our son, Prince Ned Nwoko for siting this great institution in our land. It will bring the community to international limelight and attract massive development to the community.” He emphasized.
Speaking further on the site for the University, the traditional prime minister bears his mind, “there are no controversy surrounding the acquisition of the land for the University, due process were followed. I was the chairman of the community’s land allocation committee, our son, Prince Ned Nwoko, applied to our late monarch for land to build the University, the application was referred to the land allocation committee who swing into action and eventually allocated a parcel of land to him for the purpose.”
Continuing, he said, the community entered into agreements with his Foundation which resulted in the community controlling 40% equity share of the University, this is covered by the land. Land holders in the site were adequately compensated for their crops. The deal was a fair deal, we want development. We want our community to open up for development and job creation for our youths and we are happy that the University will soon take off and we are grateful for all the things our son have been doing to bring development to our community.” He concluded.
Also, speaking, Prince Chukwuma Nwoko, in an interview with this reporter, said, “today is a great day in our community because we are witnessing history in the making, today the foundation laying ceremony of a great institution is performed in our community and everybody is happy about it, as you can see, it has been party all night long, he enthused.”
Beaming with smiles, Prince Chukwuma Nwoko said, we are happy to have a man like Prince Ned Nwoko, just imagine the jobs and high level of development that the University will attract to our community?” He quipped.
“For your information, 10 youths have been employed as Stars University Security Staff, they were given 10 brand new motorcycles and a Hilux for their operations with juicy salary attached, for life,” he said with an air of exuberant.
Rounding up his response, Prince Chukwuma Nwoko emphatically said that everybody in Idumuje Ugboko want the University, echoing the earlier speech by the Iyase of the community.
Honestly, there are some of us who were given the false information that the land given to Prince Ned Nwoko for the university, was not going to be used for the the purpose, this false information created misunderstandings among our people especially the youths, but now that the foundation laying ceremony of the University has been performed and development commenced, we will reach out to our people to settle our differences, we want good things to come to our community.” He concluded.
Earlier while presenting the duo of Amb. John Fashanu and Mary Onyali to the guests, Prince Ned Nwoko, paid glowing tributes to the two outstanding Nigerian ex athletes for their exploits in Sports and described them as role model to the upcoming Sportsmen and women of the country, he added that their experiences, expertize and professional knowledge will be needed immensely by the University to achieve it’s goals.
Mary Onyali is the first Nigerian to win Gold for the country in an Olympic games, while Amb. John Fashanu, aside been famous for his soccer exploits in England, is equally blackbelt holders in four combat sports; Karate, Kunfu, Taekwondo and Wunju.
Amb. John Fashanu lead athletes of REALS TAEKWONDO AND FITNESS ACADEMY, ASABA, to thrill the guests with the South Korean act of self defence and health enrichment exercises.
The occasion was also graced by the famous Okpamam wonder and hosts of numerous dance groups from across Anioma land.
Thereafter the guests reclined to the poolside to witness the finals of the 1st Prince Ned Nwoko under 17 Swimming championship.
The ceremony was capped by all night party organised for the youths of the community and other well wishers.
Still to come, facilities and structures on ground for the immediate take off of the unique university.
Prince Ned Nwoko is a rare comet that blaze the sky once in a century.
Our next generation will spite us if we failed to make use of his visions, ideas and connections to attract great things to our land.
